(ENG) We/Re Confess Our Faith is a participatory, rice cake ritual. It grew from Ran Suh’s ethnographic research on Korean Village Shamanism in 2011. While cooking rice cake, Ran tells the village shamanic ritual’s rice cake tradition and the last elderly people who have struggled to continue the ritual. She asks audiences to join the remembering of the tradition and the elderly people by repeating their words, hoping to repair universal experiences in the loss of traditions and communities and regeneration of communities.
(DK) We/Re Confess Our Faith er et deltagerbaseret riskage-ritual. Det udspringer fra Ran Suhs etnografiske research af shamanisme i koreanske bysamfund tilbage i 2011. Mens riskagen tilberedes, fortæller Ran om bysamfundets shamanistiske riskage-ritual og om de sidste, ældste indbyggere, som har kæmpet for at bevare ritualet. Hun rækker ud til publikum for hjælp til at huske og viderebringe mindet om ritualet og de ældres indsats for at holde ritualet i live. Det gør hun ved at bede publikum om at gentage de ældres ord i håb om at kunne reparere fælles og universelle oplevelser med tab af traditioner og fællesskaber, men også for at genskabe fællesskaber.
(KR) 우리의 신앙을 (다시) 고백합니다’는 마을굿을 기억하는 백설기 만들기 의식으로 관객을 초대한다. 퍼포머와 관객은 함께 백설기를 만들면서 서울의 마을굿을 모시는 어르신들의 이야기를 주고 받는다. 마을굿과 그 공동체의 사라짐. 역사책 속에서 식민주의와 현대화의 결과라는 축약된 거대한 단어 아래에 숨어서, 들려지지 않았던 쓰이지 않았던 목소리와 감정은 오히려 과거의 사건들을 입체적으로 담아낸다.
퍼포머와 관객은 쌀가루를 수집하고, 털고, 찌고, 만들어진 쌀떡을 똑같이 나눠먹는다. 마을굿과 엮인 어르신들의 이야기는 쌀이라는 물질에 투여되며 그들의 말과 함께 육신화된다. 퍼포머는 관객들에게 준비된 텍스트를 읽기와 말을 따라하기를 부탁하면서 이 전통과 이 어르신들을 기억하는 것을 도와달라고 부탁한다. 전통과 공동체의 상실이라는 세계적 경험을 위로하고, 고치고, 새로운 공통체를 재생하기를 희망하면서.

(ENG) ‘We Confess Our Faith (Again)’ performance work grew out of texts, photos, and videos when I interviewed the last elders who attended the village ritual (not designated as a cultural property) in Seoul in 2011. The elders complained of the frustration and difficulties they experienced with the disintegration of the village community and the disappearance of village rituals. Their experiences and emotions have been omitted under the big words of colonialism and modernization in history books. Wouldn’t the social and historical complexity be better contained in the stories of these small individuals than in the grand concepts that try to explain the world, and could we understand this contradictory world better by listening to those stories? As society changes, communities are disbanded, and traditions are lost; this phenomenon has been experienced worldwide in the last century. Now that we have distanced ourselves from the violence of the last century, isn’t it a time when we can remember, care for, comfort, and rehabilitate its disappearance? Through this performance, we hope to witness and repair the universal experience of the loss of tradition and community and to regenerate a new community.
(KR) ‘우리의 신앙을 (다시) 고백합니다’ 퍼포먼스 작업은 2011년 서울의 (문화재로 지정되지 못한) 마을굿을 모시는 마지막 어르신들을 인터뷰했던 텍스트, 사진, 영상으로 부터 자라났다. 어르신들은 스스로 경험한 마을 공동체의 해체 및 마을굿의 사라짐에 대한 좌절과 어려움을 호소하셨다. 이 분들의 경험과 감정은 역사책 속 식민주의, 근대화라는 거대한 단어 아래 생략되어버려왔다. 세계를 설명하는 거대한 개념보다 이 작은 개개인의 이야기에 오히려 이 사회의 복잡다단한 양상이 더 잘 담겨 있고, 우리는 그 이야기에 귀 기울이면서 이 모순적 세계를 더 잘 이해할 수 있지 않을까? 사회가 변화함에 따라 공동체가 해체되고 전통을 상실하는 것은 지난 세기 전 세계가 경험한 현상이다. 지난 세기의 폭력에서 거리를 두게 된 현재는 그 사라짐을 다시 기억하고 돌보고 위로하고 회복(rehabitation)할 수 있게 된 시간이 아닐까. 이 퍼포먼스를 통해서 전통과 공동체의 상실이라는 유니버설한 경험을 목도하고 고치고(repair), 새로운 커뮤니티의 재생(regeneration)을 희망한다.
